Last Saturday, August 23rd, Iowa State defeated Kansas State in a thrilling 24 – 21 victory.
With six minutes left Kansas State’s Avery Johnson found receiver Jerand Bradley for a 65-yard touchdown to draw the game to three points. But on a crucial fourth down Rocco Becht completed a pass to Carson Hansen for a game-sealing first down, as Kansas State had no more timeouts to stop the clock. The Cyclone’s Rocco Becht ended with 183 yards and three total touchdowns, leading Iowa State to an impressive week zero win against their bitter rivals.
Luckily for fans, Iowa State versus Kansas State wasn’t the only exciting game of the weekend. Hawaii defeated Stanford with a game-winning field goal off the leg of Kansei Matsuzawa. Up by three driving deep into Hawaii territory, Ben Gulbranson was picked off by a leaping Kilinahe Mendiola-Jensen, allowing Hawaii to kick a game-tying field goal. And after another defensive stop, the Rainbow Warriors won the game after their third field goal. Hawaii’s Micah Alejado played an impressive game, throwing for over two hundred yards and two touchdowns.
