On Friday, August 15, students participated in auditions for Winter Park High’s two a cappella groups – Harmonix, the female (soprano and alto) group, and Barbershop, the male (tenor and bass) group, who will potentially collaborate on some performances this year. Auditions were held virtually and consisted of students submitting videos.
“What we had to do was sing…one to two minutes of any song we wanted…and then we had to do a vocal assessment, basically to determine what voice part they wanted to put us on,” said Addee Cooper, a sophomore and member of Harmonix.
The next week, callbacks were held in person in the choir room on Thursday, August 21, from 2:20 to 4:30, where students sang an arrangement of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” in different groups for Mrs. Graff, one of the choir teachers.
“We learned a portion of a song, and then performed it over and over and over again,” said sophomore Jay Perreault, a member of Barbershop. In the end, 24 students were chosen for the 2025-2026 a cappella groups.
Overall, everyone is excited to start preparing for this year’s performances. “I am just so excited to enjoy this form of art with different people and [in] different ways. I mean, music has been our life literally since the moment we were born…a cappella is so different from what we have done before, especially choral music,” said sophomore Harmonix member Iyana Paul.
